Recently saw a post with two examples for boats:

2008 - 270 SLX
Retail Price: $111,440.00
Demo Price: $85,163.53
Rebate: $15,000
Your Price: $70,163.53

58% difference in price between retail and actual

2009 17' Montauk w/ 90 Mercury
Retail Price: $28,301.00
Your Price: $26,669.05

6% difference in price between retail and actual

The 2008 model and was a demo hull, but that's a lot to take off of a boat. I am also willing to bet that the Montauk
probably is still inflated in price and could drop a few more percent. That
being said how much wiggle room is there in say a new boat thats listed at say
120k? Is it reasonable to believe you could get a 120k(list price boat) for
much closer to 100k (new)?

Many boats are listed for what the boat is
"worth" not what it will sell for. I know everyone wants what they
feel there boat is worth, but again, how much is reasonable to discount there
listing?

In this case there are several boats around 70k
that i feel are only going to sell in the mid 50's... thats about a 40%
difference... are people over estimating the values that much, or are they just
trying to play the game. How much playing should they expect when i bring an
offer to the table?

I would be willing to bet the prices with fall even more with the threat of the oil spill looming over us. A dealer I know had four sales cancel because of the potential of the oil hitting us.
Based on the direction our economy is headed I think theprices will have to drop even more to get people to start buying again. When you talk about a 10 percent or higher reduction then that is keeping up with todays econom.

I recently (last year) bought my boat from a private seller. Yachtworld prices ranged from 25k to 45k for my exact boat but with fewer ammenities. I paid 80% of low and 40 percent of high. For that, I got a pristine boat with repowered engines. Tons of "extras" like power windlass, air conditioning, full electronics suite and full maintenance history.

Moral of the story is ...it is a buyers market out there. Make a ridiculous offer and see if they bite. On a demo boat I wouldn't offer any more than 75% and probably much less. eBay, craigslist and yachtworld are great resource tools.

YMMV
