Boat maintenance is something that all Floridians should know about. Having a boat in Florida is much like owning a car because there are so many people with one. Still, a boat is a big investment and if you’re going to put that much money into something, you need to know how to take care of it properly.

Below are a few tips for taking care of your boat that can help you protect your investment and keep it looking like new:

• Wash and wax your boat regularly to help protect it from the elements.
• Use fresh water to flush your engine after taking the boat out on the water to get the salt water out of the system.
• Drain the water from the engine before storing it for long periods of time especially during the winter months.
• Check your battery to make sure it has the right fluid level and that it’s properly charged.
• Take the time to inspect your boat and look for anything out of order, damaged or worn out. If you find anything, fix or replace it immediately.
• Invest in a boat cover and use it whenever the boat is not in use. This will help to protect it from the elements and keep it looking like new.

I found that the best way to make sure I keep up with the maintenance on my boat is by having a checklist that I use each month. I check off each task that I complete so if I get busy and can’t remember when the last time I checked my battery was, all I have to do is pull out the checklist. It’s the prefect solution for someone with a busy schedule that will help to make sure you keep the maintenance up.

Taking care of your boat not only extends the life of the vessel but it reduces the need for repairs, which saves you money in the long run. It also helps to ensure you and your family will be safer when you go out on the water because a properly maintained boat is a safer one.
